I’m sure you know the old adage, “Fortune favours the brave”. However more and more I think it’s fortune favours the connected. Humans that is.

I like talking to people, and over the last couple of days made a real effort to just catch up with people I haven’t spoken to in months, perhaps even a year or more.

In every case it’s been wonderful just to catch up, find out what’s been happening in their lives, swapping stories.

But what’s really interesting is a pattern I noticed. Many had moved onto new opportunities and really exciting projects through chance conversations.

Opportunities that would never have happened if they hadn’t happen to meet someone, somewhere and had a chat. Then one thing would lead to another.

So what’s the point you ask?

In an age of Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and who knows what other social media, nothing, but nothing ultimately beats actually physically talking to someone. Whether it’s on the phone or preferably face to face, we all crave connection.

Now I hear you cry, “I’m busy – I have no time”. Well make the time. Make the effort. Trust me that the people you call will appreciate it. Oh, and don’t do it because you want something from them. Do it to genuinely connect. Be interested rather than interesting.

And finally, this note goes out to thousands of you. And maybe we’ve never spoken. But I’d certainly like to connect on a deeper level.

So if the urge takes you, and I hope it will, pick up the phone and give me a call on (02) 9499-7958 or skype: Rashid.Kotwal. I’d love to hear from you. And who knows where it’ll take us.

Rashid.
