I’m reminded of the old Chinese curse, “May you live in interesting times”.
Times are indeed interesting. Depending on whom you talk to (and when) we’re either in boom, bust, recession or growth.
Some organisations are doing well. Others are feeling the pinch.
I don’t know where you are on the cycle. But rest assured, the wheel will turn. So here’s my take.
No matter what, the boy scout motto prevails. “Be prepared.”
For those of you doing well, my strong advice is, “Don’t take your eye off the ball.” Put as many resources as you can into marketing. You have the money to expand your market or break into new ones. Use it.
Now is not the time to sit back and think, “She’ll be right, Mate”.
Fortune favours the bold. Now is the time to go out and entrench your position.
But what if the opposite is true?
Your phones aren’t ringing. Sales are down. You’re worried. Fear takes hold and you want to hide your head under the doona hoping against hope things will get better.
Ironically, I have exactly the same advice.
Get out there and start marketing. But do it smartly. You don’t have money to waste so you must be selective. Mind you, being selective and smart with your marketing dollar should be you mantra wherever on the cycle you sit.
The biggest barrier you’ll face is fear.
Some of these thoughts may run through your mind.
“What’s it going to cost me?”
“What if it doesn’t work?”
“We’re struggling now, where are we going to find the money?”
“I don’t know what to do anyway”
Perfectly valid I assure you. However what’s the cost of not doing anything?
Courage is acting in spite of fear. And sometimes the fear can be crippling.
Where will you be in 3, 6, 9, 12 months if you continue going the way you are? Is oblivion on the horizon?
Decide to act. Take control of your own destiny. One foot in front of the other.
I’m not suggesting foolish risks. Throwing money away in one big splash and seeing nothing for it.
But if you don’t actively market your business, you will keep going backwards. Until there’s nowhere else to go.
In life (and business) there are victims and victors. Which you become is a matter of choice.
If you’re doing well, capitalise and do better. If times are lean, there’s never been a better time to get going, smartly.
If you’re ready to take control of what you can influence and ramp up your marketing, we’re here to help.
