Very few books have fundamentally changed my business thinking.victim

One was “Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make Competition Irrelevant”.

If you’re in business and haven’t read it, make it a priority to do so. But more importantly, implement the ideas.

Which brings me to today’s topic.

I frequently hear statements like these:

“It’s dog eat dog out there.”

“Competition is fierce and often crippling.”

“We have no control and keep losing deals on price.”

“We’re dependent on [some middleman] to get us the business.”

If you subscribe to any of this you’ve got a “victim” mentality. And as long as this is the case you’ll never ever be as successful as you could be.

I’m going to give you the brutal truth. And yes, it may hurt.

Stop whinging. Stop blaming others for your circumstances. And stop giving your power away.

You have to take control of your own destiny. You have to commit to doing whatever it takes. This is about a commitment to your own success.

Back to the Blue Ocean for a second.

If you’re in a “red sea” with all the other sharks fighting over the dwindling morsels, strike out into a “blue ocean” and find new markets. Or find ways of servicing and adding value to your current market in ways none of your competitors do.

Dare to be different. Just because your industry has “always done it this way” is no reason to follow the lemmings over the cliff.

Strike out on your own path.

Yes, it will be scary. Yes, not everything you do will work. But what’s the alternative?

And no, you don’t have to do it alone.

Barbara and my speciality is the lateral thinking which has helped our clients create blue oceans.

A couple of days ago I gave an organisation a blue ocean idea which could help them go from a $3M to $10M company in 3 to 4 years by tapping into a completely different international market segment with services they currently offer.

They already have the contacts in this market in another context, but never thought of going down this track.

Of course, it’s never quite that easy to implement. A lot of hard work goes into marketing and selling, and that’s where we work together to produce results for our clients.

But without first having the idea, you’ll always be fighting the competition.

And when you’re sick of doing this and want help to create new markets, call us on (02) 9499-7958 and we’ll see what we can come up with.
