This is Rashid Kotwal.

If you’re anything like me you get a lot of unsolicited sales calls.

They all begin with “Hi am I speaking with Rashid?”  And then “How are you today?”  Then they use my name in almost every sentence.

Usually, I’ll admit they get very short shrift from me.

So if your job involves calling prospects on the phone here are common mistakes you should avoid.

Once you’ve confirmed you’re speaking to the right person, stop using their name in every sentence.

It’s simply not a normal speech pattern.  You wouldn’t do it when having a casual conversation with a friend.  So don’t do it here.

Skip the “How are you today?”  You don’t know the person so it’s insincere and your prospect knows it.

Ask if this is a good time.  Do they have a few minutes to speak.  If not, ask when a better time would be.

Don’t launch into your pitch unless your prospect shows some interest in what you have to say.  Obviously reading from a script without pausing for breath or allowing them to get a word in is rude and they’ll hang up.

Take no for an answer.  Don’t keep trying to rebut everything your prospect says.  If they’re not interested, respect this and courteously finish the call.

Remember, your job here is to open the door and start building a relationship.  Unless you do you’ll never even get to first base, let alone make a sale.

Till next time, this is Rashid Kotwal.
