I love the scene in A few Good Men – where Jack Nicholson’s character screams at Tom Cruise with, “You can’t handle
the truth”.
Which brings me to a question for you as a leader. Can you handle the truth about what your clients really think about you and your service? The good, the bad and possibly the downright ugly.
And what are the opportunities you’re missing out if you don’t ask?
You might think, “Clients will tell me if something’s wrong” – but often they won’t.
Clients hold back because they don’t want to jeopardise the relationship. Staff filter what they share because they’re worried about politics, optics, or consequences. What reaches the leadership table is often a sanitised version of reality.
That’s where blind spots creep in.
The Risks of Not Listening
If you don’t actively uncover the truth, three dangerous things happen:
- You miss early warning signs. Dissatisfaction builds quietly until a client leaves without notice. By then, it’s too late.
- You make decisions on false assumptions. Without real data, you pour resources into the wrong initiatives—while ignoring what clients actually care about.
- You erode trust without realising. Small frustrations, left unaddressed, compound over time and damage your reputation in ways you won’t see coming.
Hope and guesswork aren’t strategies. They’re liabilities.
The Benefits of Unfiltered Insight
Structured, third-party client interviews solve this. Because I’m outside your organisation, clients feel safe sharing what they’d never tell you directly. That candour gives you a safety net.
- You surface unspoken concerns early. That lets you fix problems before they cost you revenue or reputation.
- You uncover new opportunities. Clients often reveal unmet needs and growth possibilities they wouldn’t raise in a formal review.
- You build credibility as a proactive leader. Acting on unfiltered feedback shows clients you value their input and strengthens trust.
With those insights, you’re no longer reacting to surprises, you’re leading with foresight.
The difference between hearing what people think you want to hear and what they really think is the difference between protecting your current revenue and accelerating future growth.
If you want the whole picture, not just the filtered one, client interviews are your safety net.
Speak to me about how I can conduct unbiased client interviews on your behalf.
You’ll gain a clear understanding of the real client experience — where they’re satisfied, where they’re quietly frustrated, and what opportunities they see that you might be missing. This lets you address issues before they turn into lost accounts and shows clients that you’re proactive, not reactive.
