If I asked what problems you solve for clients, you’d give me a confident answer. “I do X, Y, and Z. My clients get these results.”

But that’s your view. What if your clients see it differently?

You could be wasting time and money on things your clients barely care about. And missing the things they care about most.

Let me give you an example.

A client of ours ran one of Australia’s top photo labs. He worked only with professional photographers. His job was to make sure their photos printed true to colour, even on wedding albums.

He was obsessed with colour management. It’s a technical skill. It takes hours of calibration, on the photographer’s monitor and on the printer. Back then, that printer cost $500,000. It was the size of a small truck.

He thought colour management was what photographers were paying for.

He was wrong.

Sure, they wanted accurate colour. But that was only part of it.

What they really wanted was their time back.

They wanted to take photos. Not sit at a screen for hours fixing colours.

We found this out by talking to his clients. We asked what they really wanted.

Then we changed his marketing. We stopped talking about colour science. We started talking about giving photographers their time back.

This is the trap we all fall into. We assume we know why clients buy from us.

You might think clients hire you for your expertise. But maybe they hire you because you make chaos feel calm. You might think they value your strategy. But maybe they value that you call them back the same day, and tell them the truth.

Assumptions feel true once you’ve held them long enough. You build your website, your pitch, your whole business around what you think you deliver.

But the real reason clients pay you well might be sitting untapped, in a conversation you’ve never had.

That’s why we always start an engagement by talking to your clients. We ask why they bought. What you do well. Where you fall short. What else they’d buy from you.

These talks often surprise people. The thing clients value most is often something you barely mention on your website. The result they brag about isn’t the one in your marketing.

This isn’t a guess. It’s real data. And it’s sitting inside relationships you already have.

Ergo – If you asked your last five clients why they hired you, and why they stayed, would their answer match the story you tell today?

If you’re not sure let me interview your clients on your behalf, so you can find the real reasons why your clients buy and more importantly, stay.

Some of the insights we glean may well surprise you.
