It's surprisingly easy to become an authority your field.
Many people write books. And it's not to make money from book sales - rather it's the instant credibility that having a book in print will give you.
And in these days of self publishing, you don't have to suffer the pink rejection notices from major publishers - you just do it all yourself.
If you're not up to writing a book, write articles and white papers on your chosen topic and submit them to both on-line and off-line publications. 
On-line is really easy - there are hundreds of article directories hungry for good content.
In addition, create a blog for yourself. (If you don't know what a blog is, type "blog" into your favourite search engine for some great examples).
I should point out that one of the easiest ways of getting nearly instant listing in a search engine (yahoo, google, msn etc.) is to write and keep maintaining a blog. Search engines LOVE fresh content and will keep coming back and indexing your blog.
This way you get the word out far faster to your intended audience.
As to what blogging tool to use? I recommend only Wordpress - www.wordpress.org. It's free and is the best at what it does for various reasons that are beyond the scope of this article.
