Grit, Guts and Determination...

I must admit I’d never heard of Kurt Fearnley until a few weeks ago.

Born without the lower portion of his spine, Kurt who’s only 28, is one hell of an athlete who’s competed and won wheelchair events around the world.

But it was his latest adventure that brought him to my attention.Kurt Fearnley Kokada Track Crawl

Kurt was going to CRAWL the Kakoda Track in Papua New Guinea a week after winning the New York Marathon.

For those of you not familiar with the track, it’s part of Australian WWII folklore where young Australian “Diggers” fought the Japanese in truly awful conditions.

And today it’s becoming somewhat of a pilgrimage for Australians of all ages who want to experience a sense of national identity.

This description from one of the Treking Companies sort of guilds the lily.

“The 96 km Kokoda trail passes through rugged mountainous country of rainforest, jungles of fern, orchids, birds and clean mountain streams which tumble into steep valleys.”

PNG is a beautiful, rugged place – I spent a fair bit of time up there in the ‘80’s. And the track is truly difficult – you’re constantly wet, muddy and being bitten my mosquitos. Lots of people have died recently walking it.

Which made Kurt’s ambition all the more remarkable.

Well, Kurt made it – and these are some of the lessons I took away from him. Lessons that are equally applicable to your life and your business.

Kurt was always encouraged to do everything any able bodied person could. He was not given any special treatment. There was no “poor me” in his family. His family challenged him to do his best.

He set goals and achieved them. His determination and drive to succeed shines through in everything he does. In short he’s completely focused on the goal.

But by the same token he’s realistic. He knew the journey would be one of the toughest things he’d every undertaken.

Halfway through the trek when asked if he could make it – he gave himself odds of 50-50. One step at a time – well in his case, one arm in front of the other.

No man is an island. Kurt attributed his finishing the trek to the support of his family and friends – a whole lot of whom accompanied him helping him on the way. He knows he couldn’t have done it without them.

Who do you have supporting you? Who can you rely on? Who’s in your supporting mastermind group? Do they challenge you to be your best or do they let you off the hook when you make excuses?

Here at Revealed Resources, a major part of our role is to challenge you while providing the support you need.

We help you focus on what matters in your business (and often in your personal life as the two are intertwined).

This is what a current client has to say…

So as the year draws to a close and the “silly season” starts, take some time out to focus on what you’d like your 2010 to be like. Set some goals and create a realistic action plan to achieve them.
